U.S. CIS Releases New I-9 Form

More than twenty years after the rule establishing the need for I-9 forms was passed the CIS announced today that a new I-9 form is available for use.  In addition to the standard press release the CIS also issued a fact sheet discussing the new form and providing a brief Q&A.

As part of the new form, CIS is finally compliant with 1996's Illegal Immigrant Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act.  IIRIRA, as it is commonly known, removed the following five documents from the acceptable list to establish both identity and employment authorization.

1.  Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-570)

2.  Certificate of Naturalization (N-550 or N-570)

3.  Alien Registration Receipt Card (Form I-151)

4.  Unexpired Reentry Permit (Form I-327) and

5.  Unexpired Refugee Travel Document (Form I-571)

As of today, the I-9 form bearing the June 5, 2007 revision date is the only acceptable version of the form.  However, CIS will issue a Federal Register notice that will create a 30-day window that employers will have to make the transition.
